2024 Japan

Ancient traditions and architecture coexist with skyscrapers and bullet trains in modern Japan. Explore the dazzling nights of Tokyo’s neon and the contemplative quiet of the ancient temples, the excitement of Sumo and the formality of a tea ceremony.

I worked hard to create a trip that is both cultural and photographic – a journey that takes you to places beyond the usual travel agent tour.

I am thrilled to welcome Boston photographer Lou Jones as my collaborator on this trip. He is an expert on photographing in Japan, after numerous trips there on assignments. Lou is an excellent and patient teacher, an expert in aesthetics, the camera, light and working with subjects. He loves to share this knowledge and will arrange numerous opportunities for incredible image capture. He has arranged for locals to join us on parts of the journey to help us understand the subtleties of the culture. We’ve planned visits to typical tourist sites along with locals-only places to give you a true sense of Japan.

Highlights include a traditional tea ceremony, Sumo wrestling, visits to traditional bistros and bars, Japanese public bath, private hot springs bath in traditional ryokan hotel suite, tour of the famous deer-inhabited temple of Nara, photograph geishas in training, meet locals and ex-pats who have made Japan their home, ride the subway and bullet trains. The trip is limited to eight participants.
