Get Inspired by Two New Exhibits

At the Nelson-Atkins & Kemper Museums

It’s officially still summer, but with students back in school and Labor Day behind us, it feels like autumn to me. I’m ready and energized! I hope you are too. Many Redpoint members have talked to me about their individual interests making portraits. You will find lots of inspiration in two amazing exhibits in town right now.

Hurry! Not Much Time to Catch This One

Laura McPhee – River of No Return15 Until Sept. 22nd Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art This exhibit impresses for the sheer scale of the images – the 6 x 8 ft. prints are incredible – the kind of beauties that make you want to weep from the joy of seeing something so expertly crafted. It’s also filled with exquisite landscapes. Call if you’d like me to join you. I’m happy to see these images again and again. And for book lovers, there is a wonderful book available too. Whatever you do, go see this show! “Laura McPhee made these remarkable photographs over several years on successive visits to the Sawtooth Valley. River of No Return is organized like a long poem or a piece of music…a stunning look at an actual place, a meditation on rivers, nature, history, the history of landscape photography, of the American West and the idea of the American West. And—while I’m piling theme on theme—the nature of fact and the nature of myth, and how we hold the world in our hands.” — Robert Hass

About Face Exhibit at the Nelson-Atkins Museum

About Face – Contemporary Portraiture AboutFace Until Jan. 19, 2014 Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art Includes Making Pictures of People, an online exhibition I really enjoyed my first tour of this exhibit. Portraiture is what draws me to photography and these prints cover the full range of how a portrait is defined as well as iconic, historical and challenging images. It filled me with ideas to see so many variations on the theme, and as usual the Nelson’s photography curators chose a broad range of photographers for inclusion.
